NHTSA Announces MY 2022 Vehicles for 5-Star Safety Ratings Tests

Includes largest number of EV models ever, additional vehicles to be tested to verify performance of advanced driver assistance systems

| Washington, DC

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration announced its list of model year 2022 vehicles that will be tested for the agency’s 5-Star Safety Ratings program. These vehicles represent approximately 86% of the new vehicle fleet, helping consumers make purchasing decisions about the vehicles that fit the needs of their families.

“NHTSA’s rigorous testing system enables people to make informed safety decisions when it comes to purchasing a vehicle,” said Dr. Steven Cliff, NHTSA’s Acting Administrator. “With nine electric vehicle models on this year’s testing list, NHTSA will be able to provide even more safety information about the vehicles in demand.”

NHTSA crash tests new vehicles and rates them on how well they protect occupants in frontal, side, and rollover crashes. Results from these tests are compiled into a rating of 1 to 5 stars, with 5 stars being the highest rating.

The vehicle safety ratings are displayed on the Monroney label, or window sticker, of new cars, and manufacturers routinely use them in their advertising.

NHTSA also announced the list of vehicles it will test to verify the performance of certain advanced driver assistance systems. The technologies that will be evaluated are lane departure warning, forward collision warning, crash imminent braking, and dynamic brake support.
